Mudslides Bury One Village in China, 36 Killed

                            

BEIJING, KOMPAS.com - At least 36 people were killed, seven out of a single family, after a landslide hit the village Gaopo, Yunnan Province, China, Friday (11/01/2013). Similarly, Chinese state media reported.

In addition to those killed, dozens of others are believed still buried under landslides that destroyed 16 houses of citizens. Yunnan Provincial Government, as reported by the official website, has sent a rescue team to the village.

Some photos were uploaded on the official government website showed the orange-clad rescue workers searching for survivors dug muddy ground while behind them look a snowy hill.

A video uploaded to social networking sites, China showed a group of villagers trying to dig a heap of mud and rubble to search for victims, who were then taken away on a stretcher.

Snow clearly visible in the photos uploaded to the site. This area is for a few days experiencing very cold temperatures. Yunnan government said the region had the coldest temperatures for 28 years.

Yunnan province which borders Myanmar, Thailand, Laos and Vietnam is a relatively poor and undeveloped. In rural Yunnan, many makeshift houses built because of funding constraints.

Mountainous province which is known as tobacco-producing areas and the famous Pu'er tea. However, the mountainous Yunnan highly susceptible to landslides and earthquakes.

Two earthquakes in September 2012 a magnitude 5.7 on the Richter scale, killed 81 people and injured hundreds more.

A landslide also occurred in Zhenxiong, Yunnan Province in October 2012. The disaster killed 18 children.
