Obama Urges Democrats Consider Increase in Debt

group of Democrats in the U.S. Congress urges President Obama to act unilaterally if a Republican stronghold insisted inhibit additional government debt.

terrace Democratic leaders in the U.S. Senate urged President Barack Obama to consider measures which could avoid the need for Congressional approval to ensure that the country does not fail to pay its debts.

Chairman of the Senate Democratic leader Harry Reid and other Democrats said in a letter to the president that Obama should use "every legal step" appropriate authority to ensure that the U.S. does not deny its obligations and trigger a global economic crisis.

They urged the president to act unilaterally if the Republican camp insisted on a limited additional debt accompanied by spending reductions that do not make sense.

Some analysts and Democrats declared the 14th amendment to the U.S. Constitution gives the president the authority to raise the debt ceiling of 16.4 trillion dollars without the approval of Congress. The amendment was declared the legitimacy of the government debt should not be questioned.

The Obama administration has in the past said it would not take such actions.
